The maintenance log in Zonguldak opens with coal: pit surface facilities, washeries and stockyard areas are located in the city center. To the west, Kdz. In Zonguldak, fire safety is not discussed in light industry terms. To the north, the Çatalağzı line generates power: to the 2x150 MW ÇATES are added Eren Enerji's ZETES units and its own port built for coal logistics. Common denominator: hot work, oil, dust, continuous shifts.
Coal dust heats as it settles; hydraulic oil ignites standing
Two fire mechanisms operate in reverse in the basin; this difference determines the maintenance list's order:
- Coal dust and stockyard: piled coal self-ignites; fire starts inside, breaks out late. At transfer points dust never rests; when the optical detector's tank fills, the device first triggers needlessly, then wakes late to real smoke. Cleaning and sensitivity measurement must be the first item of detection maintenance.
- Hydraulic units: oil escaping from pinhole leaks on the rolling and press line sprays as mist, igniting instantly on hot surfaces. Water cannot suppress this; foam suppression and water mist is on the agenda of steel secondary industry.
- Cable gallery and transformer roomscampuses the most frequently skipped volume in heavy industry; tube weighing, nozzle inspection and room tightness must be standing items.
- Sea air: West Black Sea humidity silently corrodes external field metal; valve shaft and coupling must be tested by operation, not by eye.
The industrial map runs through four OSBs and one valley project
Industry does not concentrate in one center but disperses to districts. Çaycuma OSB established in 1993; over one hundred thirty hectares accommodate wood products, furniture, paper, glass, metal, food and PVC side by side — the district's paper tradition traces back to the former SEKA factory. Mixed Kdz. Ereğli OSBestablished in 1995 has all fifty-six parcels allocated. Alaplı OSB is operational, Gökçebey OSB is the new investment area of the Devrek line. There is also Filyos : in the valley attached to Çaycuma, port, industrial zone and free zone are being built together. Every facility brought online there means new installation; whoever did the setup commissioning acceptance tests can be conducted independently.

On the Ereğli line the costliest downtime often comes not from flame but from cable; a burning gallery halts production for days. Frequently Asked Questions
In the washery and stock yard, detectors are constantly giving false alarms due to dust; do we install a new one each time?
In most cases, no. It is not the device itself that is fatigued, but the dust accumulated in the measuring chamber; during maintenance this dust is removed and the device's remaining sensitivity is shown numerically — the majority of detectors return to duty. At crushing, screening and transfer points where dust never settles, the correct approach is often not frequent device replacement but type change: heat detectors are unaffected by mineral and coal dust, and aspirated detection is evaluated in enclosed spaces. The decision is presented to you together with measurement values; we do not choose.
We have a hydraulic press at our workshop in Ereğli; which extinguishing method is suitable for oil fire and what do you check during maintenance?
When pressurized oil mist ignites, a straight water jet often does not work and may even spread the fire; in such risks foam systems or water mist are evaluated, and if electrical load is dominant, a gaseous solution comes into consideration. During maintenance, the condition of foam concentrate, operation of the proportioner, nozzle placement and hot surface clearances around the unit are checked. We can. In systems where another firm undertakes installation, we conduct commissioning and acceptance tests independently: scenario testing, circuit and supply measurements, leak assessment in gaseous spaces and you take over with a findings list. Subsequently, periodic maintenance of the same system can be continued under a single program; you do not need to deal with two separate firms.
Can you come to Zonguldak center the same day, or should we wait for a date?
You will wait for a date — and we are telling you this from the start. For locations outside Ankara we do not commit to same-day inspection; Zonguldak jobs are written into the West Black Sea circuit schedule and confirmed in writing one day ahead. In return, you do not have to wait in case of fault: from the code on the panel screen, a few photographs and the sequence of events, remote preliminary diagnosis is conducted in the same call, which zone went offline is clarified and what temporary measure will be taken that night. The facility operates three shifts, the line does not stop; can you perform tests without interrupting production?
The vast majority, yes. We divide the work into two groups: those that do not stop the line — detector cleaning and sensitivity measurement, tube weighing, emergency lighting check, control room inspection — these are carried out section by section within shifts. Heavy items requiring line clearance or water supply, such as pump performance testing and sprinkler valve actuations, are scheduled for planned shutdown or maintenance window.
