Where is an emergency call system mandatory, and how is it configured?

A call system enables a person in need of assistance to send an alert from their location and ensures that call reaches the correct personnel with accurate location information. There are three distinct applications, each configured differently: emergency calls in accessible restrooms, guest calls in hotel rooms, and staff calls in production and office areas. The common principle is this: it is not enough for the call to be heard; it must be understood FROM WHERE the call originates.

Selection guide and FAQ

System operating principle

  • Call point — a rope-operated button in an accessible restroom (the rope extends to floor level so a fallen person can reach it), a button in a hotel room, a staff button in production areas.
  • Door-mounted alert lamp — makes visible from the corridor which area the call originates from; staff finds the correct door without checking the panel.
  • Indicator panel — displays calls by location at the duty station, shows multiple calls in sequence.
  • Address and distribution module — assigns an identity to each call point and routes the line to the panel; system expansion is accomplished through these modules.
  • Reset (cancellation) — a call closes only from a cancel button located at the call point. A system that can be reset from the panel allows calls to be deleted without anyone attending; proper configuration prevents this.
Three most common mistakes in disabled toilet call systems

First is leaving the cord too short: if the cord does not reach the floor, a person who has fallen cannot reach it and the system is ineffective. Second is placing the cancel button outside the door; cancellation should verify that help has arrived on site. Third is providing the call alert only as sound — a bell that cannot be heard in a noisy environment is lost without a warning light.

Frequently asked questions

Is a call system mandatory in disabled toilets?

Accessibility regulations require the provision of emergency call capability in disabled toilets; in public buildings, healthcare facilities, shopping malls and accommodation facilities, this item is checked during inspection. In practice, a corded button, door-mounted warning light and indicator at the duty station are required together.

Should I choose wired or wireless?

In new construction and where renovation is possible, wired systems are more reliable; power and communication run on a single line. In existing buildings where routing is not feasible, a wireless signal transmitter solution is installed; in this case battery life monitoring and range measurement are part of the installation.

Are hotel call systems and nurse call systems the same?

The logic is similar, but the requirements differ. Hospital systems include bedside units, bathroom pull buttons, staff presence tracking and prioritization among other functions. In hotel and staff call applications, the purpose is simpler: to transmit the call with the correct location.

Is the call system connected to the fire system?

Direct connection is not required; the two serve different purposes. However, they are positioned in the same equipment room, uninterruptible power supply and cabling are planned within the same project. If evacuation announcements are to be made during a fire, that is the function of the announcement system, not the call system.
