Novec 1230, chemically known as wheeled devices must have, at room temperature liquid extinguishing agent that converts to gas upon discharge. Its Global Warming Potential is approximately 1 — thousands of times lower than FM-200. This chemical difference also modifies certain steps in maintenance and refilling; on this page we explain what is specific to Novec.

Novec 1230 systems are most commonly found in data centers, archives, and electrical distribution rooms. The general framework of periodic maintenance — enclosure integrity, discharge path, detection integration — gaseous suppression system maintenance is the same as described on that page; here we address the differences specific to Novec.

What Is Different in Novec Maintenance?

  • Weighing is even more critical. FK-5-1-12 has very low vapor pressure of its own; the pressure in the cylinder is provided almost entirely by propellant nitrogen. Even if the extinguishing liquid slowly depletes, the pressure gauge will show nothing for a long time — weighing is the only reliable proof of quantity.
  • Liquid level measurement is possible. Some cylinders have a liquid level indicator or measurement port; if present, it is used as a second verification together with weighing.
  • The standard reference is TS ISO 14520-5 (the section specific to FK-5-1-12); the thresholds are common: refill or replacement at 5% weight loss or 10% pressure loss.
  • There is no residue concern after discharge: Novec evaporates without leaving a trace. However, the question of how long the discharge is retained in the space remains equally valid; door fan testing is part of maintenance in Novec systems as well.

Filling: The Advantage of Being a Liquid

Because FK-5-1-12 is a liquid at atmospheric pressure, manufacturers and suppliers can ship it in drums; this simplifies filling logistics compared to high-pressure gases. The process remains subject to pressurized vessel regulations: cylinder charging and pressurization with nitrogen, Refill Certificate of Competence is performed at the facility (SGM-2015/2 Art. 6). Disassembly, transport, weighing after filling, assembly, and commissioning are all handled by us in one go — the procedure FM-200 filling is the same chain explained step by step on that page.

Novec After 3M: Procurement Status

To be frank, this is a topic much discussed in the industry. "Novec 1230" was 3M's trademark; 3M announced its decision to exit PFAS chemical production and added the production of this product to its discontinuation timeline. What this means for the user is as follows: the chemical itself (FK-5-1-12) was not withdrawn from the market — other manufacturers continue to produce and supply the same chemistry under different brand names. Your installed Novec system will not go without maintenance or refilling; we will clearly state in the proposal stage which manufacturer the gas is sourced from and provide documentation.

For Those Considering Transition from FM-200 to Novec

The two gases differ in extinguishing concentration, storage density, and flow characteristics. Transition means recalculation of cylinder number and volume, change of nozzles, and revalidation of pipe hydraulics. In most projects a portion of the piping can be retained, but this must be shown in the design calculation — not by assumption. If a large refill cost has appeared for your existing FM-200 system, we report both scenarios (refill / switch) to you side by side in terms of cost and schedule; the decision is yours.

Why Should You Procure This Service from a Single Firm?

Fire safety is not a single system, but two interdependent engineering disciplines: mechanical side (pump unit, sprinkler, hydrant, fire cabinet, piping) and electronic side (detection, alarm, announcement, suppression triggering, control panels). Few firms in the market perform both sides together; most facilities obtain mechanical maintenance from one firm and electronic maintenance from another.

The problem starts here. What activates the system during a fire is not individual devices, but the connections between them: the flow switch will alert the panel, the panel will trigger the pump and damper, the announcement will sound before the gas system discharges, the elevator will descend to the evacuation floor. If there is a gap in responsibility between two firms in the middle of this chain, both firms may hand over their equipment as "working" while the system as a whole does not function. The most frequent fault we observe in the field is not a defective device, but an interface that no one ownsA zone monitoring module connects an entire conventional detector line to the addressable loop. Critical areas are renewed with addressable devices while secondary zones continue to operate with their existing wiring. This provides significant cost advantage in capacity upgrade and renovation projects.

As ASPEK Mühendislik, we are headquartered in Ankara and serve throughout Turkey. We conduct mechanical and electronic maintenance within the same team schedule; the installation, filling, and maintenance of sprinkler, hydrant, and fire pump units Practical threshold: if device count exceeds 50 or if knowing fire location within seconds is critical, an addressable system should be preferred. FM-200 and Novec 1230 gas suppression systems fall within this scope — areas where finding a qualified technician is most difficult.

We structure our scope accordingly: from detection to gas suppression, from sprinkler and hydrant lines to fire pump units we provide end-to-end maintenance to the complete fire safety systems in a building — single contract, single point of contact, single reporting format. For facilities that request it, we also add periodic maintenance of camera (CCTV) systems to the same contract; when fire and security infrastructure is consolidated under one roof, there is no such thing as a "fault falling between two firms."

To Set Up Your Maintenance Program

One contract, a solution for everything: we provide end-to-end maintenance to fire detection, gas suppression, sprinkler, hydrant, and pump units in their entirety; if you wish, camera (CCTV) system maintenance can also be added to the same contract.

If you do not have the brand, age, and last maintenance record of the existing system on hand, that is not a problem; the first step is anyway inventory and current condition assessment. Setting up an annual program without seeing what is there in the field means selling maintenance for a system that does not exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What determines the Novec 1230 refilling price?

The liquid charge quantity (kg), number of cylinders, nitrogen pressurization, hydrostatic test requirement and transportation distance are the main items. The gas manufacturer and origin also affect the price; we explicitly state which manufacturer's FK-5-1-12 will be used in the quotation. For itemized pricing without quantities, please refer to our maintenance pricing page.

3M stopped manufacturing; is my Novec system now obsolete?

No. 3M's decision concerns only their own branded production; FK-5-1-12 chemistry continues to be sourced from other manufacturers. Maintenance, refilling and spare parts for your installed system remain sustainable. You will see the gas manufacturer and certification in our quotations.

Will Novec PFAS not be banned?

FK-5-1-12 chemistry belongs to the PFAS family and regulations for this family are debated globally; however, today its use and refilling are legal in Turkey, and with global warming potential around 1, it is not under the pressure of F-gas reduction schedules. In new investment decisions, we explicitly note this regulatory risk in the feasibility report.

Can you refill my FM-200 cylinder with Novec?

No, and be cautious of any quotation suggesting this. The two suppression agents have different design concentrations and flow characteristics; conversion is a design task requiring recalculation of hydraulics and nozzles. Pressurizing a cylinder with a different agent leaves the system undocumented and unpredictable.

Does a Novec cylinder also undergo hydrostatic testing?

Yes. As a pressurized vessel, the vessel test interval applies to Novec cylinders as well. During testing, the liquid is recovered, the vessel is tested, and if acceptable, it is recharged; a cylinder past its test due date is not refilled without testing.
